HOW IT WORKS

A lump-sum benefit for certain covered conditions.

Critical illness insurance may pay a lump-sum benefit if the insured meets the policy definition for a covered condition and any applicable requirements. Which conditions are covered, and how each one is defined, varies between policies.

WHAT IT CAN HELP WITH

The benefit is yours to direct.

Time Away From Work

A benefit can help with income while you are not working.

Household Expenses

Everyday costs carry on regardless of what changes.

Childcare or Caregiving

Extra help at home can be part of what you need.

Travel for Treatment

Appointments are not always close to home.

Home Modifications

Changes to the home can make recovery easier.

Other Financial Priorities

How the benefit is used is up to you.

A benefit is generally paid to you, not to a provider, so it is not limited to medical bills. Policy terms and conditions apply.

WHAT AFFECTS THE COST

What insurers look at.

Age

Health

Smoking status

Coverage amount

Policy type

Length of coverage

Medical history

Family medical history

WHEN TO REVIEW

Times to review this coverage.

Starting a family

More people depending on your income changes the picture.

Buying a home

A mortgage is a long commitment to cover.

Taking on more debt

What you owe affects how much coverage makes sense.

Changing jobs

New benefits may cover more, or less, than the old ones.

Becoming self-employed

There is no group plan behind you once you work for yourself.

Losing workplace benefits

Coverage that ends with a job may need replacing.

Income changing

A different income can change the amount you would need.

Existing coverage expiring

A policy reaching its term is worth reviewing early.

WE HELP YOU ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

Common questions

Critical illness questions.

How is this different from Life Insurance?
Life insurance pays your family if you die. Critical Illness pays YOU while you are alive, helping you afford treatments, cover bills while not working, or modify your home.
How is it different from Disability Insurance?
Disability pays a monthly percentage of your income if you cannot work. Critical Illness pays one large lump sum based on the diagnosis, regardless of whether you can work or not.
Do I have to use the money for medical bills?
No. The money is yours to use however you wish—seeking treatment out of country, paying off the mortgage, or covering daily living expenses.
